Business Function

Sometimes, you need to create a Decomposition tree but you don’t have native visualisation in Power BI. Typically, you would go for custom visual or alternative visual based on the business requirement and project budget.

With AI Visual of composition tree, you can easily create visualisation and help end users to understand the data better with full flexibility.

Technical Function

We are going to give you a clean step by step guideline to create Decomposition Tree

Step #1: You need to make sure you have Microsoft Power BI Desktop version 2020 to make sure Decomposition is working for you. (Yes, it was released earlier to that but this is for safety and precaution)

Step #2: There are two ways select decomposition tree visual in Power BI desktop

                a. Select from Visualisation pane along with bar chart, pie chart and other visualisations.

                b. Select from Insert menu

Step #3: Select the Decomposition Tree and relevant Measure and Dimensions as usual like other visualisation. (Really, There is no trick)

Step #4: Once you selected the Dimensions and measure, you will see something like this

I have selected Dimensions: Category, Sub category and country

I have selected Measures: Sales Amount

Step #5: Drill Down to other dimension based on your convenience. You just need to click the plus button to drill down that’s it

The small light bulb neat to High value and Low value is about AI enabled feature to show you highest and lowest value in the category. You can learn more about the the AI feature in the Video above  👆

Step #6: You can remove dimensions from the Decomposition Tree visually like never before. You just need to hit the “x” icon on the top of the dimension name. In the image below, you can see the “X” near to Category and Sub-category.

Step #7: Visual representation of connecting categories based on the selected dimensions in the decomposition Tree. You can see the dotted lines between the dimensions, if you selected a lowest value (AI feature) the dotted line guides you to the lowest value.

Bonus

We have a bonus for you in the video, there is cool thing will happen when you change the dimension in the visualisation.

You can able to find the feature in the video above. Don’t miss it!
